AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX & 2950X Review > Performance Summary, Who Is It For? - poindexterdwellied
Performance Compact, Who Is It For?
With a ton of benchmarking data and we feel suchlike in just about ways we'atomic number 75 right starting to scratch the surface. Terminated the next few weeks we'll be spending more time looking into newfangled productivity workloads that we can throw at the 2990WX to attempt and oeuvre out if information technology's good for all the world differently just rendering.
For straight off let's induce a look at some price vs. carrying into action scatter plots before wrapping this reassessmen up.
Let's take the POVray data as the 2990WX had its best showing hither, IT's much faster than the 7980XE while costing slightly less. Indeed for rendering tasks the 2990WX is the bees knees and while it might non pop the question the best apprais gross, it certainly provides the top respect at the top end of the scale.
The 2950X destroys the Nitty-gritty i9-7900X offering importantly more performance at a reduced toll. The only healthier value option here is the discounted 1950X. Still in POVray some 2nd Gen Threadripper CPUs look dandy.
The endorse toll vs operation scatter plot we're going to take is for Adobe Premiere as this bad much sums high the 2990WX when it's handling a not-rendering task.
Here we see how bad things can hold AMD's new 32-core processor. When encoding with First the 2990WX is substantially worse value than the Core i9-7980XE and thus every single CPU well-tried.
You'Ra basically looking at Threadripper 1920X public presentation for 4x the Price. Thankfully the 2950X is again opaque and offers the most make love for your buck of some Central processor proved.
Who Is It For?
The Threadripper 2990WX certainly is an freaky beast. Concisely, AMD has made a 32 core Central processing unit that appears quite in force for rendition. And that was about as a great deal as we can prove from our definitive test suite. The memory limitations do seem to make the 2990WX a very centralised product and we'Ra not predestinate how many users are going to find it useful for powering their workstation, given the inconsistent results.
But then, we have nada bad to say some the Threadripper 2950X. Information technology does everything well and in our opinion it takes over from the 1950X A the ultimate high-remnant desktop CPU.
We'ray still in the process of conducting extensive multi-tasking benchmarks to understand the 2990WX better. So far we think what we'Re seeing is painting a more positive picture. We're following up with additional testing that's more centralized on taking advantage of the 2990WX in the next day or so (Update: instantly reverberant. We're career that mega-tasking, check kayoed the results here.)
AMD themselves admit this is a focused product and that's why they birth branded this chip to include the 'W. They have also shown in their review guide the 2990WX whipping the 7980XE in St. Elmo's fire, Blender, Cinebench, POV-Ray, MAYA and Adobe Dimension. What set each those programs have in common? They're all rendering applications.
Meanwhile the Threadripper 2950X was dependable against the Core group i9-7900X in HandBrake, TrueCrypt, 7-zip, Premiere and a few rendering applications. And so while the 2950X can clearly do information technology altogether, AMD is well witting the 2990WX can't, only they're not going to tell you that. Worse still, rather than afford you a chance to work out the 32 center model might not be all it's cracked busy be for your particular workload, they took pre-orders for only that part a week in front.
We voiced these concerns with our AMD contacts over the weekend and they assured us that anyone who is unpleasant with how the 2990WX performs stern set off their pre-order and if whatsoever money has exchanged hands it will be refunded. Sol we're not ready to close the book on the 2990WX just yet, but given that in that respect are more or less obvious shortcomings, we practise feel the $1800 asking price is a bit much. The Effect i9-7980XE is grossly overpriced as IT is, but at least it does everything well and short of the insane selling price, has no helplessness.
The 2990WX, then again, not only has the same issue all massively core fleshy CPUs have: utilization. Determination software that can full use it, but the kicker is the computer software also can't be heavy on memory access, or it will cripple the 2990WX pertinent where information technology's as slow as a mainstream background CPU.
This ultimately is the issue with the 2990WX. We would be okay with most software the likes of Premiere not using 64 togs, simply in that casing the 2990WX should act like a 2950X and as we've seen, IT doesn't as IT's loosely much slower.
So how do you know if your exceptional workload will stultify the 2990WX? You don't unless someone tests it first. This means you need individual to test ride it for you, and it's not just good that they test the software package you'atomic number 75 using, they have to test it in a manner that's similar to your economic consumption case, if not exactly the same.
We'd throw been dead fine with all this if AMD came out and said, the 2990WX is designed for rendering workloads and attributable limited bandwidth, performance power be lower than expected. IT's pretty much the Threadripper Pixar version, no really, they should have called information technology the 2990CB, that makes to a greater extent sense.
But, we'atomic number 75 not ready to call it retributory yet. The TR 2990WX still has more to prove although it won't be the come by 32-core elevate replacement I was expecting. Still I will be getting an upgrade and that upgrade will make up the real hero here. It's no secret we very liked the 1950X and the 2950X is plainly a more refined version, typically oblation 5-8% more than performance, while coming in $100 less at launch. Right nowadays the TR 1950X is a cracking saving shop $780, simply considering the 2950X's introductory terms it's amazing value.
The good news show is the more affordable Threadripper 2950X becomes the ultimate high-end background CPU. We feel many look-alike the States will be scraping their 2990WX plans, and most will be heaving to the 2950X rather. Of course, if you already cause a TR 1950X the 2950X is not a worthwhile upgrade, so your processor hasn't been rendered obsolete by hook or by crook.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X Scorecard
Pros: Takes over its predecessor as the ultimate high-end desktop Processor. The 2950X offers more performance, uses less power and runs cooler than its Core i9 competition. Supports Error correction code memory board, quadriceps-channel memory and more PCIe lanes than regular Ryzen processors.
Cons: Only marginally faster than the TR 1950X. It's not a gaming processor, meaning it performs well just you can puzzle out similar gaming operation for to a lesser extent.
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX Card
Pros: The 2990WX is a unpleasant CPU capable of break records on rendering tasks. Other processes that can use many cores simply are not computer storage intense could benefit from the 2990WX.
Cons: Memory bandwidth issues result in inconsistent performance on a variety of tasks. Very expensive. Potentially a one-fox jigger that does one thing really, really well, but the others not much (for the price).
